FW2024 Glacial Requiem
Glacial Requiem
In the thick of the technological fog, our vision seems obscured, as if blinded by the onslaught of modernity. In the relentless adaptation to contemporary society, we may unwittingly lose our sensitivity to the energies of nature. My affinity for Iceland stems from its portrayal as Earth‘s most pristine and raw canvas. In an age of growing AI technology, we often find ourselves adrift in a sea of digits, forgetting our inherent connection to the earth, air, water, and sun, which brings life.
Each year I travel to Iceland to explore its beautiful terrain; basking in its tranquillity while investigating the impact of climate change on its environment. Facing challenges like glacial melting, rising sea levels, and coastal submergence, Iceland held its first funeral for a disappearing glacier, Okjokull, in 2019. Despite 11% of its landmass being ice-covered, scientists alarmingly report these glaciers disappearing from Iceland at a rate of 11 billion tons annually. Studies indicate an accelerating pace of ice melt, with projections suggesting a continuous trend for decades to come, with dire consequences for local and global environments, water resources, and ecosystems. Scientists predict that without intervention, Iceland‘s glaciers could vanish entirely by 2200. Nature‘s force transcends human control, displaying both grandeur and vulnerability. If humanity continues to wreak havoc on ecological environments, we’ll inevitably face greater catastrophes.
As a fashion designer and global citizen, I’m compelled to highlight the challenges Iceland, and our fragile Earth, face in my SISIO FW2024 collection. I‘ve chosen ice dyeing as the primary fabric design technique. Blue; my favourite color, for me symbolizes the hues of glaciers and oceans, thus becoming the season’s predominant palette.
Discovering and exploring Abaca, an exciting eco-friendly fabric derived from banana tree fibres, its production process minimizes chemical treatment, while the rapid growth of banana trees reduces the overexploitation of the land and water resources in its native countries.
Through this collection, I fervently hope to evoke a profound appreciation for nature‘s beauty, reigniting our love for it and inspiring tangible action to nurture and protect this precious habitat that sustains us all. While amidst the vastness of this planet, where our souls find solace, let us also remember the responsibility we bear to safeguard it for future generations.
